The electrode attached to OLED (organic light-emitting display) is about 2cm x 1cm (1/2 inch x 1/4 inch), manufactured by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) process, where methane and hydrogen are pumped into the vacuum chamber, and the copper plate is heated to 800 degrees (1472 degrees F). There is a chemical reaction between the two gases, and when methane is dissolved into copper, it forms a graphene atom on the surface. Once the layer is fully formed, the whole device is cooled, the protective polymer is applied, and the copper is chemically etched to reveal the single atomic layer of the pure graphene.
"This is a real breakthrough in the research and integration of extremely demanding materials," said Dr. Beatrice Beyer, director of FEP project of Fraunhofer organic electronics, electron beam and plasma technology. Although this is not the first flexible display screen to use graphene in its construction, it introduced OLED technology for the first time, taking a big step towards panchromatic screen and fast response time.
