Segment LCD Display

What is a segment LCD display?

A segment LCD, also known as a static display or pure glass display, consists of two sheets of ITO (indium tin oxide) glass with a twisted nematic in between. A static display is a segment display with one pin per segment.

What are the advantages of segmented display?

Although segmented display is an older technology, it is still one of the most popular. After all, they can’t display all the colors of TFT or OLED like you can see on phones and tablets.

Why?

Here are the main reasons why people keep designing these LCD monitors into new products.

Minimum mold fee

The processing fee for custom displays is the lowest of any technology, and it allows customers to receive LCDs manufactured to the exact dimensions required, including custom icons and segments.

Focus LCD offers a one-time NRE (non-recurring engineering) or tool fee. This includes all designs, technical support and samples. Click here to find a PDF showing an overview of our tool process: Custom LCD Flowchart

Minimum unit price

Unit prices for segmented displays can range from less than $0.50/unit to $15/unit, depending on quantity, glass size and other variables.

Low power consumption

Segment displays require less power than other display technologies such as TFT, OLED, and UWVD. This makes these LCDs ideal for battery powered or solar powered applications. They require a minimum drive power, estimated at 2uA per square centimeter. A glass-only display (no backlight and no controller) requires about 10% of the power required for an LED backlight. In other words, a static display without a backlight would draw about 1mA; the same display with an LED backlight would draw between 10mA and 25mA. Most displays can be driven at 3.3V or 5V, since microprocessors can operate on both. 3.3V is becoming more and more popular because two dual “AA” batteries can produce voltages between 3.0V and 3.3V.

These displays remain one of the most popular technologies, and most of them are custom. Many people consider the process of designing a custom segment LCD to be complicated and difficult to understand except for a few experienced people. But after designing custom LCDs for over 14 years, it’s fair to say that just about anyone can choose the best option for their product.

In other words, you don’t have to be an engineer or have an MIT PHD to design a custom LCD for your application. So instead of providing a list of technical terms and equations, these are the different options available.
